Pam Carlson

Pam Carlson first traveled to Eswatini in 1999 and quickly developed a lifelong connection with the country. In 2000, she founded the Swazi Kids Society, supporting education and opportunity for local children. What began as a single student trip in 2016 has since grown into Jacaranda Journeys, with Pam guiding more than a dozen groups of students, adults, and families through meaningful volunteer work, cultural experiences, and unforgettable adventures. For Pam, Jacaranda Journeys is more than a business—it’s a passion project and a way to share her second home with others.

Joseph Aryee

In 2002, I moved to Eswatini to help establish missionary work, which I continue to support.
As a trained teacher I progressed to teach biology, chemistry, and general science at St. Michael’s High School in Manzini. In 2010, I began volunteering with Swazi Kids Society as a mentor, supporting students to overcome challenges and achieve academic and personal success. This role grew into part-time work and, in 2019, a full-time position as project coordinator. I now oversee Swazi Kids’ educational, mentoring, and community building projects across Eswatini.

Tema Mlangeni

My name is Temancube Mlangeni, and I was born and raised in Nceka, a village in the eastern part of Eswatini. Orphaned at a young age, I was brought up by my uncle, whose care and guidance helped me navigate the challenges of growing up without parents. Despite the hardships, I remained determined to pursue my education.

I began my academic journey at Sinceni Primary School, where I built the foundation for my future. Later, at Nceka Secondary School, my life took a transformative turn when I met Pam Carlson—the founder of Swazi Kids. She became a beacon of hope during a difficult time.

Mrs. Carlson generously paid my school fees for Form 4 and 5, ensured I had basic necessities, and provided me with essential study materials. Her support didn’t end there. As I progressed to tertiary education, she continued to stand by me, offering a monthly stipend that helped me stay focused on my studies. I hold a diploma in electrical engineering which is a rare career for women in my country.

I look forward to an opportunity to give back, by helping out with her work at Jacaranda Journeys.

Simba Philan

My name is Simba Philani. I was raised in Manzana, Mbabane, by my father who supported me and my 15 siblings and me through his business in traditional attire and sewing. Through this work, I was connected to Pam Carlson, Joe Aryee and Swazi Kids Society.

Consequently, today, I am pursuing a Bachelor of Pharmacy (B.Pharm) at Eswatini Medical Christian University, thanks to the support of Swazi Kids. My academic journey faced a major setback when my father sadly passed away during my first year. His passing left me devastated and uncertain about my future, especially my ability to continue my studies.

However, Swazi Kids stepped in and provided the support I needed—not only covering my tuition but also helping me with other basic needs. Their unwavering kindness has allowed me to continue my education and live with the dignity and stability.

Inspired by the compassion shown to me, I am committed to giving back to my community. I volunteer my time tutoring younger students in science subjects and participate in local health awareness campaigns. My goal is to use my pharmacy degree to serve underserved communities in Eswatini, ensuring that others have access to the care and support they need. Further I look forward to helping Pam with her Jacaranda business and meeting people from far-away places!

Mlondi Hlophe

My name is Mlondi Hlophe, and I was raised in Sidwashini by a devoted single mother who instilled in me strong values and the importance of hard work. I am currently pursuing a Bachelor of Commerce (BCom) degree at the University of Eswatini, with aspirations of building a meaningful and successful career.

When I first enrolled at university, I faced significant financial challenges. Fortunately, I received support from Swazi Kids, an organization that assisted me with tuition fees and monthly stipends, allowing me to continue my studies and focus on my goals.

Through Swazi Kids, I had the privilege of meeting Mrs. Pamela Carlson, the organization’s founder, whose encouragement and example have been a great source of inspiration on my academic and personal journey.

Angel Simelane

My name is Angel Simelane from the Lubombo region of Eswatini. I hold a Bachelor’s Degree in Information Technology from the University of Eswatini (UNESWA)—a dream made possible by the generosity of Swazikids.

I work as a Core Network Engineer at Huawei Technologies Eswatini under the MTN Project.

When I was in grade 10, my father passed away from diabetes, leaving our family without income. As the second-born of six children, I saw firsthand how hard it was for my mother to keep us in school.

In 2019, I enrolled at UNESWA to study Information Technology but did not receive a government scholarship. Once again, Swazikids stepped in, supporting me financially through to graduation. I remain deeply grateful to Swazikids and Make Pam for their life-changing kindness.

Now, as part of the “Jacaranda Journeys” project, I look forward to gaining international business experience and returning home with ideas to promote youth entrepreneurship and improve living standards in Eswatini.

From safaris to service projects, Jacaranda Journeys blends exploration with meaningful connections for schools, families, and groups.
